The CAB 1500 is the latest addition to LEM's CAB series, a line of automotive sensors that leverages the properties of magnetic induction transducer technology to provide the high accuracy and low offset required for reliably counting coulombs. It does this by measuring the discharge current of Li-ion batteries to estimate their state of charge. The CAB series is notable for its compliance with the ISO 26262 functional safety standard (according to Automotive Safety Integrity Level C) and its ease of use via a 500 kbps CAN (Controller Area Network) interface.
Backed by LEM's 50 years of experience in developing electrical measurement solutions, the CAB 1500 open-loop magnetic induction sensor incorporates electronic mechanisms and software that guarantee the high levels of reliability required by Battery Management Systems (BMS). The sensor can be mounted on the bus bar or panel and provides both the best resolution, down to 0.1%, along with the lowest offset and maximum accuracy in this market segment.

In addition to its extended current range up to ±1500A and compatibility with 800V applications according to IEC 60664-1, the new sensor is capable of non-intrusive measurements for complete galvanic isolation up to 2.5kV. Other features of the sensor include its low-power VS shunt technology and a total error of 0.5% for temperatures from -40°C to +85°C.
Jérémie Piro, Global Product Manager for BMS and Battery Storage, notes: “Accurately measuring the battery charge level is crucial for achieving maximum electric vehicle range, and design engineers will welcome this new addition to LEM’s CAB family, which delivers the performance levels they need. The CAB 1500 uses magnetic induction technology to provide the best state-of-charge estimates in the current market for advanced EV battery management systems and will play a vital role in enabling electric vehicles to travel longer distances than ever before.”
