Renesas' patented IPS technology uses sensing elements consisting of copper coils etched onto a printed circuit board (PCB) to detect the position of a metallic object. Unlike bulky magnet-based sensors, IPS products can operate at 600 Krpm (electric) and detect position immediately upon startup, with a propagation delay of less than 2 μs, making them ideal for high-speed motors. Furthermore, the sensor technology supports self-calibration and linearization functions, ensuring consistent performance throughout the motor's lifespan.

Based on the Vernier principle, the dual-coil sensor technology supports up to 19-bit resolution and up to 14-bit accuracy, surpassing comparable products on the market. This robust sensor technology operates reliably in harsh environments, where it may be exposed to high temperatures, dust, humidity, vibration, and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Inductive sensors are immune to stray fields, require no maintenance, and are less prone to errors than magnetic sensors. These advantages make inductive position sensors a more attractive option than conventional optical encoders or magnetic-based encoders, which are typically heavier and more expensive.

The inductive position sensor technology will be compatible with the most widely used UART, ABI, and I²C communication interfaces, ensuring seamless integration into industrial networks and facilitating real-time data monitoring and analysis. Furthermore, the new sensor technology will be supported by a comprehensive toolchain, including dedicated software for user customization and accuracy optimization. Renesas plans to combine the new sensor with numerous compatible devices in its portfolio to offer a wide range of winning combinations. These winning combinations work seamlessly together to deliver a streamlined, low-risk design that accelerates time to market. More information on winning combinations at: renesas.com/win
