SIL3-certified CANopen safety encoders. Whether it's steering angle, wheel speed, vehicle tilt, or vibrations, these measurements must be recorded and transmitted quickly and reliably to the control system's safety interface. The following industry standards are available as interfaces: PROFIsafe via PROFINET, Failsafe via EtherCAT (FSoE), and CANopen safety. CRC checksums and dual data transmission (normal and inverted bit) ensure secure communication between the sensor and the control system. The minimum safety level is SIL2 (IEC 61508) or PLd (ISO 13849). For some applications, it's even SIL3.
The TBSN/TRSN series includes encoders for high functional safety requirements, certified according to IEC 61508, SIL3, and compliant with ISO 26262, ASIL-D. This means they can be used in applications where safety is particularly critical, such as public road transport. For example, driverless transportation systems that can be remotely controlled from a workstation. Operators use a monitor, pedals, and a steering wheel to steer a camera-equipped, remotely controlled vehicle to the desired destination. Transmission to the vehicle uses the high-speed 5G standard.

The position value is redundantly recorded and processed independently by two microprocessors. Output is provided via the CANopen security protocol. The single-turn TBSN version offers a resolution of 65,536 increments per revolution. The multi-turn TRSN version offers an additional 4,096 revolutions. The encoders feature a magnetically shielded stainless steel housing, allowing direct mounting on a motor without affecting measurements. High EMC/ESD immunity is also guaranteed. With an operating temperature range of -40°C to +70°C and a protection rating of up to IP69K, the encoders are suitable for use in harsh environments.

They are also capable of withstanding high levels of shock and vibration. With a diameter of only 42 mm, they can be used in space-constrained applications. Other examples of miniature encoders include devices with a very small housing length of only 30 mm and, for example, a CANopen safety interface, or fully redundant devices with either CANopen or analog output. These sensors are not functionally safe but can still be used in safety applications due to their redundancy. These are just a few examples of the wide range of safe and compact sensors that can be used in a variety of mobile sensing applications, starting from a diameter of only 38 mm. Safety switching outputs can be added to the sensors' safety functions upon request. These can be found in our NOCx cam switch units or NVx vibration sensors for condition monitoring. Other customized solutions and a range of different interfaces are also available.
