It has versatile switching configurations with single or double SP8T, SP10T or SP12T multiplexers, suitable for building complex microwave switching networks.

In addition to microwave switching applications, the modules are also well-suited for many uses in the RF spectrum, where extremely low insertion loss and ultra-high isolation are critical. Microwave multiplexers (MUXs) have numerous applications in communications testing, including routing a measuring instrument, such as a network analyzer or even an antenna, to multiple UUTs (units under test) in ATE systems.

The 40-788 (PXI) and 42-788 (PXIe) series of PXI microwave multiplexer modules is suitable for switching 50 Ω signals from 8 GHz to 40 GHz. They are available in single SP8T configurations with and without termination, and single and dual SP10T or SP12T configurations, with front-panel mounted relays. The internal relay termination function can improve signal integrity by directing unused signals to a 50 Ω load. Remote versions are also available, which can accommodate one or two multiplexers in a dual-slot PXI or PXIe module. The panel-mount or remote mounting option allows users to place the switches in the most convenient location for their application.

Panel-mount multiplexers occupy four slots (single versions) or six slots (dual versions). Remote-mount options connect each switch to the control module via two 1.5 m cables, providing flexibility in switch placement. They also take up less space in the PXI chassis and allow microwave relays to be positioned closer to the UUT and RF test equipment. This can shorten cable runs and improve system performance.

“These modules offer the highest RF and microwave switching performance available in a Pickering switching system,” said Steve Edwards, Pickering Switching Product Manager, “as well as the highest channel count microwave multiplexer switches available from any PXI vendor. This can result in fewer switches and associated interconnects being required for high-channel-count microwave switching applications, improving signal quality and ease of programming.”
The 40/42-788 family features a switching cycle control function to facilitate monitoring the status of the test system. Determining the number of operations per channel can help manage wear by allowing high-use channels to be replaced with less-used alternative paths. Front-panel LEDs indicate when the RF path is closed.
Connection is made using high-performance SMA, SMA 2.9, or N-type connectors, depending on the bandwidth required. High-quality interconnect cables for RF and microwave applications are also available.
