The new series complements the R&S SAM100, which operates between 2 and 20 GHz, extending the available frequency range up to 53 GHz. The SAM200 is designed for test and measurement applications in the Ka, Q, and V bands, used in satellite communications systems, aerospace applications, and telecommunications, among other fields.

The family consists of the SAM200 and SAM200 Advanced models. The former can be used as a gain block to increase the power of RF signals, while the Advanced version incorporates additional features designed to facilitate its integration and configuration within test systems.

Power detector and USB and LAN interfaces

The R&S SAM200 Advanced integrates a power detector and incorporates USB and LAN interfaces for communication and control. The device also features a web-based graphical interface that allows access to its parameters and functions from a browser, simplifying its configuration when used as part of a test bench or automated system.

Another of its features is the ability to select between three different paths for the RF signal:

- Low noise and high gain;
- Standard operation;
- Low gain.

Selecting these routes allows the amplifier's behavior to be adapted to different test conditions.

Optimization of EVM measures

The different gain modes can be used to adjust the signal quality in error vector magnitude (EVM) measurements, especially when the amplifier works in conjunction with vector signal generators or vector network analyzers.

This capability is useful in situations where it is necessary to balance output power, gain, and noise level depending on the characteristics of the analyzed signal.

The SAM200 is primarily intended for testing radio frequency components where the power available directly from a signal generator or vector network analyzer is not sufficient to reach the level required by the device under test.

Coverage from 20 to 53 GHz

The frequency coverage from 20 to 53 GHz allows the use of a single amplifier for different microwave and millimeter wave bands. This range includes the Ka, Q, and part of the V band, used in applications such as satellite communications, high-frequency links, and certain telecommunications systems.

By covering a wide frequency range, the device can replace several narrower-band amplifiers in certain test benches, reducing the number of devices required in the setup. Protection against impedance mismatches

As a solid-state power amplifier, the R&S SAM200 incorporates protection mechanisms designed to maintain its operation under adverse load conditions. These include output mismatch protection and a power foldback system. This mechanism reduces power output when certain conditions that could affect the amplifier are detected.

These functions are designed to protect the equipment and maintain its operation in test benches where load conditions may vary during measurements.

Desktop and rack formats

The R&S SAM200 amplifiers are available in both benchtop and 4HU rack configurations. This combination allows them to be used in RF and microwave laboratories, as well as integrated into automated test and measurement systems.

With the addition of the SAM200, the Rohde & Schwarz range of system amplifiers now covers frequencies from 2 to 53 GHz through the SAM100 and SAM200 families.
