Microchip Technology Inc. is the first to address this need by offering open-source, production-ready tools for managing its Adaptec® Smart Storage HBA, SmartHBA, and SmartRAID products in OpenStack data centers.
With its investments and offering of ready-to-use open-source tools and extensions, Microchip eliminates the complexity for customers of connecting storage resources to its Adaptec range of storage controllers in heterogeneous OpenStack-based data centers. The Adaptec Smart Storage tools are pre-certified, tested, scalable, and customizable, simplifying the management of large cloud server networks within enterprise infrastructures.
The Adaptec Smart Storage OpenStack tools consist of three components: 1) an extension for MaaS (Metal as a Service), an operating system-less installation tool from Canonical Ltd., a leader in the cloud industry and creator of Ubuntu; 2) a scheduled service formula, or “charm,” created with Canonical’s Juju modeling tool that allows users to remotely install Adaptec ARCCONF in any type of cloud environment so that connected adapters and devices can be configured and managed remotely through the Juju dashboard; and 3) an extension for the OpenStack Horizon graphical user interface that allows users to easily discover, configure, and manage standard Adaptec Smart Storage adapters and custom embedded solutions.
“At Microchip, we are very excited to deliver new open-source tools that facilitate the integration of our Adaptec Smart Storage solutions used in the OpenStack software-defined infrastructure,” said Andrew Dieckmann, associate vice president of marketing in Microchip Technology’s Data Center Storage (DCS) business unit. “This unique offering will enhance our customers’ ability to quickly and efficiently deploy new storage assets within the market-leading OpenStack open-source cloud server management environment.”
“The $6.1 billion OpenStack market continues to see double-digit growth rates worldwide across public and private clouds in virtually every application imaginable, including containers, VMs, and bare-metal installations,” said Danny Carreno, director of ecosystem development and operations at the OpenStack Foundation. “The open infrastructure community driving this growth is also expanding through companies like Microchip, which are integrating projects such as the OpenStack Horizon Dashboard for compatibility with Microchip’s Adaptec range of storage controllers. Their investment in the open infrastructure community can make it easier for operators to quickly configure, install, and manage storage resources in OpenStack-based data centers.”
Adaptec storage adapters have been reliable solutions for 30 years. Microchip's new, comprehensive Smart Storage product line consists of Adaptec SAS/SATA adapters and integrated circuits that deliver reliability, high performance, feature-rich management, and an attractive total cost of ownership for businesses.
