At the heart of Nikola's truck range is a new commercial vehicle powertrain developed through a partnership between Nikola and Bosch. Both teams redesigned the powertrain from the ground up. Bosch's expertise with the eAxle, or electric drive axle, has enabled Nikola to move quickly toward bringing its electric truck to market.

The eAxle developed by Bosch is a scalable, modular platform that integrates the motor, power electronics, and transmission into a single compact unit. This makes it adaptable to any type of vehicle, from passenger cars to light trucks. Nikola and Bosch will leverage this expertise to commercialize the world's first eAxle for all-wheel-drive commercial vehicles, mounted on a long-haul truck.

The eAxle will utilize proven electric machine technology for commercial vehicles and Bosch's SMG (Separate Motor Generator) independent generator set.

The eAxles will be paired with a custom-designed fuel cell system, also jointly developed by Nikola and Bosch, and designed to deliver a benchmark range of vehicles. The vehicle's overall controls will also be jointly developed based on Bosch's vehicle control software and hardware.

Bosch and Nikola will also jointly develop the power transmission system for the Nikola line, which will include the vehicle's safety concept and electrical architecture. Utilizing advanced simulation technologies throughout the entire development process, from system design to testing and validation, the Nikola One and Two trucks will launch with one of the most optimized and advanced vehicle control and system designs in the mobility sector.
