Coordinated by the Efficient Energy Cluster of Catalonia (CEEC), the initiative is financed by the European Union and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and brings together five reference entities to develop and validate an innovative agrivoltaic solution applied to fruit crop farms.
Climate change is altering natural crop cycles, accelerating flowering and increasing the exposure of crops to extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, late frosts, and episodes of intense solar radiation. These conditions directly impact productivity, fruit quality, and the profitability of farms, highlighting the need to incorporate new solutions that increase the sector's resilience.
In this context, agrivoltaics emerges as an innovative alternative capable of combining agricultural production and renewable energy generation on the same land. In addition to contributing to the decarbonization of the energy system and promoting self-consumption through renewable sources, these installations create a more favorable microclimate for crops by providing shade, reducing heat stress on plants, decreasing water evaporation, and protecting farms from adverse weather conditions.
A Smart Agrivoltaic Solution to Optimize Agricultural and Energy Production.
The main objective of TECSOL-FRUT is to design, implement, and validate an innovative agrivoltaic system based on rigid, adjustable photovoltaic technology, with control of the tilt angle of the solar panels, applied to two fruit farms located in different autonomous communities. This solution will allow for combining agricultural production with renewable electricity generation, simultaneously improving agronomic performance, energy efficiency, and the sustainable use of resources.
As a key differentiator, the project will develop a digital planning and simulation tool based on mechanical, deterministic, and mathematical models capable of predicting the behavior of agrivoltaic systems under different environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and solar radiation. This platform will allow for the evaluation of different operating scenarios, optimize both agricultural and energy production, and facilitate data-driven decision-making.
Furthermore, during the pilot phase, advanced field sensor systems, satellite imagery, and weather forecasts will be integrated to feed artificial intelligence models designed to optimize irrigation, anticipate the phenological evolution of crops, estimate their yield, and monitor their health. All this information will be integrated into a Digital Twin that will offer a comprehensive, real-time view of crop performance and energy production.
A strategic consortium to boost innovation.
The project is coordinated by the Catalan Efficient Energy Cluster and includes the participation of leading organizations that contribute complementary expertise in the agricultural, technological, and energy sectors.
The consortium comprises the Eurecat technology center, specializing in digitalization, sensors, artificial intelligence, and simulation applied to the agri-food sector; TROPS (Málaga, Andalusia), a leading cooperative in Spain in the production and marketing of avocados and mangoes, known for its commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability; Fruits de Ponent (Alcarràs, Catalonia), a leading cooperative in stone fruit production with a strong commitment to agricultural innovation; and Powerfultree (Basque Country), a company specializing in the engineering, design, and development of hardware solutions for agrivoltaic applications. and the Catalan Efficient Energy Cluster (CEEC), an organization that brings together companies and technology centers in the energy sector and acts as project coordinator, fostering collaboration among the different partners and ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative.
The combination of agricultural experience, technological knowledge, and innovation capacity makes TECSOL-FRUT a project with high potential for transfer to the entire agri-food sector. Thanks to this collaboration, the Operational Group will develop, implement, and validate an innovative agrivoltaic system on two farms located in different autonomous communities, allowing for the evaluation of its performance in diverse climatic and agronomic environments and facilitating its future implementation in other production areas.
Objectives and expected results
Throughout its development, TECSOL-FRUT will establish the agroclimatic, agronomic and technical conditions necessary to implement the agrivoltaic systems in both pilot crops, develop predictive models capable of simulating their behavior, install the infrastructures for their experimental validation and evaluate, during a complete crop cycle, the impact of these solutions on the quality, productivity and sustainability of the farms.
In parallel, the project will calibrate the digital tools using real-world data collected in the field and develop predictive algorithms based on artificial intelligence. These algorithms will enable the creation of a functional Digital Twin, facilitating the extrapolation of results to new farms and different types of crops.
With this, TECSOL-FRUT aims to demonstrate the technical and functional viability of smart agrivoltaics as a tool to improve the competitiveness of the fruit sector, increase the resilience of farms to climate change, and accelerate the implementation of renewable energy in the agri-food sector.
Furthermore, the project responds to a growing trend in Europe, where agrivoltaics is playing an increasingly important role as a solution for reconciling agricultural production with renewable energy generation. Thanks to its commitment to digitalization, artificial intelligence, and a focus on the sector's real needs, TECSOL-FRUT has high potential for technology transfer and scalability, contributing to the development of more efficient, sustainable, and resilient agriculture.
In the project, Eurecat is helping to generate advanced solutions to address the challenges faced by agri-food companies, with the aim of improving the health and well-being of people and the planet. The technology center contributes its expertise in digital technologies, cyber-physical systems, and environmental technologies to generate a positive impact on the sector.
TECSOL-FRUT is funded by the European Union and the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
