The system is based on smart charging technology that generates the current needed to charge a lithium-ion traction battery using a standard 230V AC household power supply, housed in a conveniently designed enclosure. Consequently, the hybrid plug-in unit can be easily charged using any standard household outlet. The portable design allows the charging case to be carried in the vehicle to charge the electric drive unit's battery whenever needed.
Compared to a permanently installed charging system or a public charging station, this solution offers the user maximum flexibility. Thanks to the external charging concept, vehicle weight and fuel consumption can be reduced, while operating range can be increased.
HEITEC developed both the electronics and the enclosure technology specifically for this demanding application.
To ensure reliable load management, a high-performance communications system had to be integrated in addition to the power electronics, which exchanges information about the load and safety parameters with the vehicle. To guarantee operational safety, the insulation quality had to be continuously tested, and current failures, which also had to be monitored, were among the requirements.
The packaging technology requirements were equally versatile: Not only did the chassis have to be compact, weatherproof, splashproof, and equipped with an innovative cooling system, but it also had to provide sufficient space for wiring and—no less importantly—meet the client's corporate design requirements.
