This program uses a tailored combination of traditional discharge testing and the latest generation of internal resistance testing to assess the health status of batteries and the impact of various parameters, such as battery type, age, discharge cycle, and ambient temperature.
The Battery Optimization Program, currently available in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, offers four standard battery management solutions, ranging from a low-cost option with limited testing to one that delivers maximum value for the most critical installations (comparable to the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standard). Each offering targets a different type of installation requirement, and all can be further customized to meet specific customer needs.
The program is dynamic and highly flexible, employing various testing techniques and frequencies to accommodate different installation demands in terms of budget and criticality level. At its core are highly skilled field technicians who use standardized data collection templates to securely and accurately gather observations and test results and generate reports. A team of battery experts from Emerson Network Power analyzes this information, recommends necessary corrective actions, and develops future testing procedures to ensure high battery and network reliability. The result is optimized battery lifecycle maintenance costs.
“With one of “For our latest customers, we replaced an annual discharge test with a combination of discharge and internal resistance tests, allowing us to more accurately identify battery health and maintenance needs,” says Anders Eriksson, general manager of maintenance for Emerson Network Power’s Energy Systems line in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. “We used the data from these tests, along with our knowledge of the facilities and battery history, to design a battery maintenance strategy that improved reliability while reducing the customer’s battery maintenance costs by 25%.”
All the work is documented in a report that includes test data and a clear summary of battery health and recommendations. Emerson’s local maintenance team reviews this report with the customer and helps design and implement a maintenance program based on the data provided and the size and criticality of the network.
“Batteries are critical to ensuring network availability, but telecom providers often use that criticality to justify operating expenses and wasted capital related to batteries,” Eriksson maintains. “Our Program Battery optimization eliminates unnecessary spending by decreasing investment in new batteries, reducing battery testing costs, and improving battery reliability and lifecycle.”
Emerson Network Power elaborates on the possibilities and potential applications of this type of program in its recent report, “Guide to Optimizing Your Battery Maintenance.”
