Backup auxiliary power

Saft Batteries has developed a complete range of high-tech accumulators for the railway sector, capable of providing a reliable source of auxiliary backup power for the interior lighting system, on-board computers, data and communication systems, ventilation and door opening functions, as well as for critical safety requirements such as the electromagnetic braking system.

The latest addition to this range of batteries from the company is the MSX device, which provides the necessary power to ensure the continuity of onboard systems in modern electric trams, trains, metros, EMUs, and high-speed trains. For railway applications where energy capacity is paramount, Saft offers the MRX range. The MSX and MRX batteries combine high reliability with low weight and reduced maintenance requirements, and can be supplied as fully integrated systems. These are custom-developed, ready-to-install systems.
Another solution presented by Saft Batteries was the NHM-Rail Nickel-Metal Hydride battery, developed for specific applications where space and weight savings are critical.

Diesel Starting System:
The reliable operation of the engine starting system is of increasing importance, leading operators to seek a variety of starting methods for trains. This allows engines to be stopped during breaks in daily operation to save fuel and reduce noise and emissions.
Saft's MSX batteries are particularly well-suited for these high-cycle applications, which can drastically reduce the operating life of other battery types, such as lead-acid batteries. MSX batteries offer high power, ensuring the instant starting of diesel engines and locomotives, especially in low temperatures.

Saft has also introduced the new SNC (Nickel Supercapacitor), a high-power asymmetric device that, when combined with a conventional battery, provides high starting reliability, even at very low temperatures. This solution has already been tested in starting systems for buses, military vehicles, and heavy trucks.

Developments in batteries for hybrid traction
The Saft NHP Ni-MH battery system features a compact design that provides excellent storage capacity, reduced weight, and low maintenance, making it ideal for hybrid rail applications.

A strategic application of this battery system is its use as a traction power source for trams, functioning as a switch between overhead lines and providing onboard power during periods of operation without the motor, such as when crossing areas without overhead lines in cities. It also enables autonomous operation over distances of approximately 800 meters. Furthermore, the battery systems are compact enough to be installed on the vehicle's roof.

Saft also has extensive and recognized experience in innovating lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technologies, which show interesting potential for the next generation of railway systems; especially in applications that require an efficient energy storage mechanism, such as regenerative braking.
