Its internal 1.5 A switches provide an output voltage of up to 15 V and an input voltage range from 1.8 V at startup (0.5 V operating) to 5.5 V. This makes the LTC3121 ideal for batteries or standard 3.3 V and 5 V power supplies. The LTC3121 delivers a continuous output current of up to 400 mA at 12 V from a 5 V input. Furthermore, its 1.5 A current limit makes it ideal for applications with limited input current, such as PCI Express, while also reducing the size of the required external components. Burst Mode® reduces the quiescent current to as low as 25 µA, extending battery life in portable applications. The combination of a thermally enhanced 3mm x 4mm DFN package and a fixed 3 MHz frequency allows PCB designers to achieve a balance between the required solution and efficiency.
       The LTC3121 features internal synchronous switches with an RDS_(ON) of only 121 mΩ (N-channel) and 188 mΩ (P-channel) to provide efficiencies of up to 95%. Output disconnect allows for complete discharge of the output voltage at power-off and eliminates extensive inrush currents at startup, reducing stress on the input power supply. The LTC3121 also regulates the output voltage when the input voltage exceeds the output voltage, making it compatible with any battery chemistry. For applications requiring absolute noise levels, the LTC3121 can be configured via an external pin to operate in continuous PWM mode. Additional features include synchronization with external clocks, output overvoltage protection, and robust output short-circuit protection.
The LTC3121EDE is available from stock in a 12-pin, 3mm x 4mm DFN package. The industrial version, the LTC3121IDE, is guaranteed to operate at junction temperatures from -40°C to 125°C.
