The ACPL-C797 represents a significant evolution from Avago's successful first-generation HCPL-7860 current-sensing amplifier. Improved features and specifications include an operating temperature range of -40 to +105 °C, 5V and 3.3V compatible digital outputs, lower offset voltage, gain accuracy of +/-1%, and clock frequency accuracy of +/-10%. By implementing a digital filter on an FPGA, ASIC, or DSP, the serial output is decoded to an effective 12-bit resolution. Furthermore, the new isolation amplifier boasts a signal-to-noise ratio of 78 dB and minimizes EMI with a controlled-slope output.
Available in a new stretched SO-8 package, the ACPL-C797 features a 30% smaller footprint than the traditional DIP-8. Even with its miniature package, the ACPL-C797 meets the 8 mm clearance requirements as well as the safety requirements of 1140 V peak for operating insulation voltage and 5 kVrms/minute for insulation voltage according to IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5, UL 1577, and CSA standards.
The ACPL-C797 also meets the 0.5 mm through-insulation clearance specification required by numerous medical applications. The SSO-8 package can be used with automatic mounting equipment, unlike many Hall-effect current transducers that require manual insertion for mounting.
Applications for the ACPL-C797 focus on current and voltage sensing in power conversion and motor control systems, such as brushless AC and DC motor control, industrial inverters, servo drives, robotics, wind power generation, and solar power systems. Other applications include signal isolation in switched-mode power supplies, A/D conversion in industry, and isolated sensing in general.
