that require high power delivery performance and advanced software control capabilities to enhance flexibility. These advanced capabilities make the BMR465 ready for future software-defined power architecture (SDPA) systems, which power system architects foresee as the path to achieving highly efficient, energy-optimized grid architectures by 2020.
The BMR465 POL converter can operate as a standalone 90 A unit or as part of a larger power system when processor boards require higher current. Built on a two-phase topology, four BMR465 modules can be connected in parallel to deliver up to 360 A. BMR465 modules can be part of a multi-module, multi-phase power system (up to eight phases) that enables phase diffusion, reduces peak current, and also reduces the number of capacitors required by the end systems.
The BMR465 is fully compatible with PMBus commands and is integrated into Ericsson Power Designer software, making it easy for system architects to simulate and configure complete multi-module and multi-phase systems before deployment, thereby gaining valuable time to market.
Designed to deliver state-of-the-art performance, the BMR465 incorporates "compensation-free" modulation techniques, which automatically provide stability, precise line and load regulation, and good transient performance across a wide range of operating conditions. Nonlinear load control ensures that the control loop is always stable and the load step response is within a single switching cycle, providing unparalleled stability and minimizing filter capacitors, saving cost and board space.
Operating from 7.5 V to 14 V input, the BMR465 can function across a wide range of intermediate node voltages from 8 V to 14 V, thus complying with the Dynamic Bus Voltage (DBV) scheme implemented in SDPA and reducing power dissipation and saving energy. The factory default output voltage is 1.2 V, but it can be adjusted from 0.6 V to 1.8 V via either a pin-strap resistor or PMBus commands. As part of SDPA, Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS) can also be implemented via PMBus, adjusting the BMR465 output voltage to the optimized core voltage as required by the processor.
Designed for power-critical applications in enterprise and high-density network equipment, the BMR465 power train ensures maximum efficiency and reliability and is built from the latest generation of power semiconductors. This allows the module to deliver 94.3% efficiency at half load with a 12V input and 1.8V output, along with an MTBF of 27 million hours (based on Telcordia SR-332 Issue 2, Method 1).
The BMR465 is available in two mechanical configurations with respective layout dimensions of 50.8 x 19.05 x 10.0 mm and System-in-Package (SIP) dimensions of 50.8 x 9.51 x 19.05 mm. Both configurations share the same functional inputs and outputs, simplifying board design when combining different packages to accommodate various cooling methods. Currently available in a through-hole version, a surface-mount version of the BMR465 will be available in the near future.
The BMR465 also features monotonic and soft start, inrush current protection, overheat protection, output short circuit and overvoltage protection, and Power Good and differential sensing pins.
