The customer also acknowledged Trackwise's ability to deliver consistent copper thickness across the entire manufactured part, thanks to a coil-to-coil copper cladding line, achieving a margin of +/- 5µm along the entire 72m length. This enabled defined and tightly controlled layer-to-layer strength with the thinnest possible thickness for flexing in the final product.
"We are delighted to have smashed our previous 2020 record of 52m, which itself surpassed our 2019 record of 25m," commented Philip Johnston, Managing Director of Trackwise. "Many applications are emerging for very long FPCs as customers realize the advantages the technology offers. In addition to the industrial sector, we are also gaining business in the aerospace and automotive industries, where our FPCs can help increase battery life and the range of electric vehicles, for example, by reducing weight. Another key market is healthcare, where users are looking to replace existing microwires with cheaper, more reliable, and more flexible solutions.
The versatility and cost-effectiveness of roll-to-roll manufacturing capability, with no length limit, means we are delivering enhanced connectivity solutions for new and innovative product designs all the time, even when the customer doesn't require a product as extreme as 72 meters in length."
