Microchip's free, cloud-based IDE brings the most popular features of the award-winning MPLAB X IDE to internet-connected PCs, laptops, and tablets. MPLAB Xpress offers the most comprehensive feature set on the market, including a library of Microchip-validated code examples, an interface to the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) 3.0 for GUI-based peripheral configuration, an automatic code generator, built-in MPLAB XC compilers, programmer/debugger hardware support, and 10 GB of secure internet storage with a myMicrochip account. Users can easily migrate their projects to the full, downloadable MPLAB X IDE. Furthermore, the MPLAB Xpress Community allows developers to share code, design ideas, and expertise.
Cloud-based hardware development is accomplished by connecting any USB-compatible PC, laptop, or tablet to tools such as the MPLAB Xpress evaluation board. This development board incorporates an integrated programmer, a PIC16F18855 microcontroller, and a mikroBUS™ header for expanding the system with over 180 MikroElektronika Click™ boards.
The MPLAB Xpress IDE is also compatible with Microchip's Curiosity development board, an affordable tool with an integrated programmer and debugger, as well as expansion options for pluggable boards and external connectivity. Furthermore, this online IDE can be used in conjunction with Microchip's popular PICkit™ 3 in-circuit programmer/debugger, which provides programming and debugging capabilities for over 1,000 PIC microcontrollers.
The web-based MPLAB Xpress eliminates installation time and allows users to develop a complete application in minutes. Users can open a browser and quickly generate code with the integrated MPLAB Code Configurator, which is built into MPLAB Xpress. This feature is not available in any other cloud-based IDE. Users can then test that code with the included simulator, compile the code, and then program and debug the target microcontroller.
The MPLAB Xpress Community allows users to quickly get started on their projects, troubleshoot problems, and inspire others by sharing ideas and knowledge. The "Examples" section provides easy, searchable access to microcontroller code developed and validated by Microchip engineers, including configurations, basic functions, and advanced projects. Designers can contribute to this knowledge base, making their stored projects accessible to the rest of the user community. To facilitate discussion and collaboration, an MPLAB Xpress user forum is also available, where users can interact with each other and with Microchip support staff.
A wiki, implemented by Microchip support personnel, is also available.
Regarding MPLAB XC compilers, users can access the web to update to the latest available version (the XC8 compiler is currently available). Support for the XC16 and XC32 compilers will be available in mid-2016.
The first 2000 people to access and register will be able to get an MPLAB Xpress evaluation board here.
