The Intel Galileo board is the first product in a new family of Arduino-certified boards with Intel architecture. Galileo is designed for pin compatibility with Arduino hardware and software, including add-on boards that connect to an Arduino board to expand its capabilities. It is also software-compatible with the Arduino software development environment (IDE), enabling greater usability and ease of introduction. In addition to Arduino hardware and software compatibility, the Galileo board features several industry-standard PC I/O ports and functions to extend its use and native capabilities beyond the protection of the Arduino ecosystem. A full-size mini-PCI Express slot, a 100 Mb Ethernet port, a microSD card slot, an RS-232 serial port, a USB guest port, a USB client port, and 8 MB of NOR flash memory are included.
Galileo uses the Arduino integrated development environment (IDE) to create programs for what are called Galileo "sketches." To run a sketch on the board, simply connect a power supply, connect the Galileo client's USB port to your computer, and upload the sketch using the IDE interface. The sketch will then run on the Galileo board and communicate with the Linux kernel in the board's firmware via the Arduino I/O adapter.
