The NXU series of dual-feed buffers in 4-bit, 2-bit, and 1-bit configurations offers a smaller, higher-performance, and lower-cost level translation solution that simplifies communication between a host processor and peripheral I/O devices compared to existing designs in a wide range of consumer, industrial, automotive, and enterprise applications.
Existing address-controlled level translators typically require an additional GPIO pin for address control, a requirement that increases device size and adds design complexity by consuming host processor I/O resources. On the other hand, while self-addressing devices do not require a GPIO pin for address control, they typically cannot provide the level of current control required by many applications.
Furthermore, they can sometimes exhibit non-deterministic I/O behavior, a result of one-shot architectures, which can be time-consuming to debug. Another drawback of controlled-address and self-address devices is that they often consume too much power for power-sensitive implementations.
Nexperia's NXU family of devices is designed to combine the parametric performance capabilities of address-controlled translation devices (i.e., high data rates, high drive force, and fail-safe power sequencing) with the smaller size and reduced pin count advantages of self-addressing devices. NXU translators consume significantly less power (>2 times less) than self-addressing devices (for a comparable number of bits). They also have a wider supply voltage range (0.9 V to 5.5 V), making them suitable for translating between any voltage nodes from 0.9 V to 5 V. NXU devices also support faster data rates (up to 250 Mbps) than other voltage translation solutions.
The NXU translator family complements Nexperia's existing portfolios of controlled steering and self-steering level translation device families, providing level translation solutions for applications that require a combination of self-steering and controlled steering capabilities.
For maximum flexibility, several data address and package configurations are offered, while the automotive-qualified (AEC-Q100) variants are also available in side-wettable packages to enable automated optical inspection.
