The UCR006 series of ultra-compact (0.6 x 0.3 mm / 0.2 x 0.1 in) low-profile chip resistors are offered in resistances as low as 100 mΩ, providing significant energy savings. These are the industry's first 0.603 mm / 0.201 in resistors to ensure a working temperature range of -55 to 155°C in the low-resistance region and boast twice the power rating of competing products of the same size, enabling support for a wide range of applications. This increased power capacity in a smaller size makes them ideal for replacing larger 1.005 mm / 0.402 in resistors, contributing to further miniaturization.
In order to operate in smartphones and other electronic devices, voltage monitoring and current sensing are required internally, and resistors above 100 mΩ are typically used. However, to minimize power loss during current sensing, it is important to use the smallest possible resistance value—while still providing sufficient power to ensure reliable performance.
To meet these needs, ROHM has developed the UCR series of low-resistance on-chip resistors designed for current sensing. However, in recent years, the proliferation of smartphones and the emergence of high-tech wearable devices have increased the demand for components that are even more compact and consume less power. But for resistors in current sensing applications, several challenges must first be overcome to reduce chip size, such as maintaining low resistance values and tolerances while improving power rating.
ROHM's latest series uses new materials and a new structure to achieve a low resistance (100 mΩ) in a 0.603 mm size, with a class-leading, low-thickness design.
Furthermore, heat dissipation is improved, and the power rating is increased to 0.1 W—twice that of conventional products. The operating temperature range has also been extended in the low-resistance region to an industry-best -55°C to 155°C, enabling a wider range of applications. Unique laser-tuning technology makes it possible to achieve a resistance tolerance of ±1% (Class F), which has traditionally been difficult to achieve for low resistances. Furthermore, these new products have adopted the reverse-mount design used in the existing series to minimize resistance variations during soldering and ensure a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) between 0 and 300 ppm/°C, reducing resistance fluctuations due to temperature changes. This provides the high-precision current sensing required by today's high-performance devices. Looking ahead, ROHM will continue to expand its line of compact, high-precision resistors.
