Its main applications include electric power steering (EPS) systems, electric braking systems, and shift-by-wire transmissions.
With the implementation of the AEC-Q100-approved TB9083FTG, automotive design engineers can control and drive the external N-channel power MOSFETs required for driving three-phase BLDC motors. An integrated fail-safe safety relay pre-switch complements the three-phase pre-switch. It also includes a charge pump, a motor current detection circuit, and an internal oscillator circuit, as well as an SPI communication interface (with integrated CRC checking).
Multiple fault detection functions are also provided, such as undervoltage (VB, VCC, VCC_OP), overvoltage (VCC, VCC_OP, VCPH, VGS of external MOSFET), overtemperature, and an external MOSFET VDS detector. The trip threshold, response action, and other settings can be conveniently configured via the SPI interface.
The high level of integration reduces the need for external components, decreasing the number of components and reducing system size and cost. This is especially useful in motor drive applications requiring redundancy.
The TB9083FTG driver IC is housed in a small P-VQFN48-0707-0.50-005 package measuring only 7.0 mm x 7.0 mm (a 66% reduction in footprint compared to the previous generation of Toshiba products). The inclusion of a wettable flank structure allows for visual inspection of the solder joints using automated optical inspection (AOI) equipment, contributing to improved solder joint reliability.
Toshiba will continue to strengthen its range of gate driver ICs for automotive three-phase BLDC motors capable of meeting the requirements of ISO 26262 (2nd edition). In the future, Toshiba will contribute to the electrification and improved safety of automotive equipment by continuously introducing products with enhanced functionality.
