Both new features expand the capabilities of vehicle exterior cameras and address two of the industry's main challenges: incorporating advanced AI functions while maintaining minimal energy consumption and providing high-quality, reliable images in all lighting conditions.
OAX7700: Intelligent Vehicle Monitoring with 97% Less Power Consumption.
The new OAX7700 ASIC allows for the upgrade of existing outdoor camera solutions, such as Panoramic View Systems (SVS), transforming them into ultra-low-power, edge AI-based parking monitoring systems.
The device integrates a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that enables AI functions to run directly at the edge, including human presence detection, identification and classification of people and objects, and distance estimation.
In its "always-on" operating mode, the camera continuously monitors the vehicle's surroundings with minimal power consumption. When it detects a relevant event, the system instantly switches to normal mode and can retain five to ten seconds of video footage prior to the event. The electronic control unit can then analyze this footage to validate the trigger and activate an alarm when necessary.
This capability reduces false alarms triggered by movements that pose no threat, such as those caused by wind, birds, trees, or debris. At the same time, pre-event images can provide vehicle owners with valuable information should an incident occur.
Parking monitoring systems equipped with the OAX7700 consume 97% less energy than existing solutions on the market, according to OMNIVISION. Running AI functions on the device itself also significantly reduces the processing load on the vehicle's central computing platform, enabling faster and more efficient decision-making at the perimeter.
The integrated NPU also allows manufacturers to develop and implement their own AI algorithms on the chipset, expanding system capabilities beyond security without compromising low power consumption. The architecture also allows for the addition of new features via over-the-air updates.
“With the OAX7700 ASIC, we’re equipping existing automotive camera solutions with highly efficient parking surveillance functionality, while also supporting modern software-defined vehicle architectures: our customers are investing in a system that can be upgraded and improved throughout the vehicle’s lifespan,” said David Ho, senior marketing director at OMNIVISION. “We’ve leveraged technology from our security market segment, where OMNIVISION is recognized as a global leader.”.
Key features of the OAX7700 include its ultra-low-power AI vision processor with NPU, 24/7 continuous operation, support for custom algorithms for person and object detection and distance estimation, and the ability to discriminate between non-threatening movements to reduce false alarms. It also integrates stacked PSRAM and flash memory in a 60-pin BGA package.
The OAX7700 comes in a compact 5.5 x 3.5 mm package. Samples are available now, and series production is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
OX08D30: 8MP Vision for ADAS and Autonomous Driving.
Alongside the OAX7700, OMNIVISION has introduced the new OX08D30 8-megapixel CMOS image sensor with TheiaCel™ technology, designed for ADAS systems and exterior cameras for autonomous driving.
The new sensor expands the dynamic range in a single exposure to mitigate LED flicker and other artifacts resulting from time-sampling, delivering high-quality images in various lighting conditions. Furthermore, it maintains pin-to-pin compatibility with the OX08D10, widely used in ADAS platforms.
The flickering of elements such as LED traffic lights presents a challenge for vision systems, as it can hinder ADAS and autonomous driving functions from correctly interpreting illuminated traffic signals.
To address this issue, OMNIVISION's 2.1-micron TheiaCel™ technology combines state-of-the-art side-overflow integration capacitors (LOFIC) with the company's high dynamic range (HDR) DCG™ technology. This combination mitigates LED flicker under varying lighting conditions.
Thanks to TheiaCel™, the OX08D30 offers enhanced HDR performance and extends detection ranges up to 200 meters. The sensor is also designed to maintain high performance at high temperatures and deliver high color accuracy in automotive outdoor camera applications.
“We’ve updated the OX08D30 to deliver industry-leading low-light performance, with unmatched stability at high temperatures and in color ratio,” said Paul Wu, Director of Automotive Product Marketing at OMNIVISION. “It incorporates our proprietary TheiaCel™ technology, enhanced with a higher-density LOFIC that captures even more photons and brighter LEDs. This further improves LED flicker mitigation (LFM), providing the best possible image quality and enhancing driving safety.”.
The OX08D30 also boasts 20% lower power consumption and a 50% smaller footprint than other image sensors in its class. The device utilizes OMNIVISION's a-CSP™ package technology to deliver a particularly compact solution.
OX08D30 samples are now available, and the device is currently in series production.
A Smarter, More Efficient Vision Platform for Vehicles:
With the OAX7700 and OX08D30, OMNIVISION expands its portfolio of automotive exterior camera technologies, covering both intelligent image processing and capture.
While the OAX7700 brings artificial intelligence to the edge to enable continuous monitoring with minimal power consumption, the OX08D30 delivers high-resolution, wide dynamic range images to enhance the perception of ADAS and autonomous driving systems.
Both solutions reflect the evolution toward increasingly intelligent, efficient, and software-defined vehicle architectures, where cameras not only capture environmental information but also play a growing role in its interpretation and processing.
