Although USB is a very common serial communication protocol found in large microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs), it is not always found in embedded systems. This is due to a couple of factors: electrical signaling requirements, protocol overhead, and the availability of simpler communication protocols such as Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), I2C, or UART. While USB will not replace these simpler communication protocols, it is worth considering for portable applications.
