Insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) require comprehensive protection to prevent damage and failure caused by conditions such as short circuits, overloads, and overvoltages. Protection is critical to ensure safe and stable power conversion operations in applications such as motor controllers and solar and wind power generation systems. To detect overload and overvoltage conditions, isolation amplifiers that provide fast fault response or feedback can be used in the output stages and on the DC bus. This article describes how to use these devices to protect IGBTs against overloads and overvoltages.

A global leader in power conversion technology needed an inverter design that was flexible and easily adjustable. Standalone inverters use the DC power produced by solar panels or other sources stored in a battery and supply it as AC power when needed. Designers must be able to connect additional inverters per phase in parallel, or to operate in three-phase mode for applications where the user's power requirements vary over time.
