Therefore, no additional USB drivers are required. It has been specifically designed to allow engineers to quickly understand the device's functionality and architecture, as well as leverage readily available and installed standard application software and drivers.
The FT12 series, comprising three models and based on the D12 industry standard, offers unique features such as battery charge detection, numerous interface options, and optimized device sizes, enabling designers to select the most suitable chip. An integrated serial interface engine (SIE) in each FT12 handles the USB protocol, including packet recognition, verification, and sequencing. It supports multiple USB transfer modes, enabling powerful isochronous and high-throughput data transfer, as well as interrupt protocols.
For the FT120 and FT122 ICs, the microcontroller/FPGA connection takes the form of a generic 8-bit parallel interface, while the FT121 supports SPI Slave mode. The FT120 has three USB endpoints, with 320 bytes of endpoint buffer configurable in the controller. The FT121 and FT122 models offer greater capacity, with up to eight bidirectional endpoints available and 2 kbytes of endpoint buffer capacity.
The FT121 and FT122 also incorporate USB battery charger detection, allowing additional power to be drawn from a dedicated charging port (DCP), providing up to 1.8 A instead of the usual 500 mA, without the need to add multiple external components to the circuit. All devices accept 5 V or 3.3 V input voltages. The FT121 and FT122 handle all clock signal generation internally and do not require a crystal, thus freeing up valuable PCB space and reducing system cost. A dedicated clock output pin with a programmable clock frequency (from 4 MHz to 24 MHz) is also included.

The FT120 and FT122 are supplied in TSSOP-28 and QFN-28 packages, while the FT121 is supplied in TSSOP-16 and QFN-16 packages. All of these advanced USB controller ICs have an operating temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C.

Development tool support is provided by four evaluation modules—UMFT12XEV, UMFT120DC, UMFT121DC, and UMFT122DC—which can be used to implement and demonstrate USB functionality. The 'DC' designation indicates daughter-card functionality, which enables USB connectivity via a micro-B port and can be used in conjunction with the UMFT12XEV board or another microcontroller-based development system. The UMFT12XEV board is equipped with numerous functions and includes the LPC1114 microcontroller (pre-loaded with CDC type driver support), a prototyping area, numerous connectors (SPI, JTAG, GPIO), LEDs to indicate status and battery charge detection.
