Microcontrollers are used in many systems to control multiple DC/DC converters at the point-of-load (POL), thus forming a hybrid control system to manage system behavior during startup, monitor electrical parameters, and manage the power consumption of peripheral subsystems. However, more sophisticated solutions can be found on computer motherboards, graphics cards, or CPU blades in servers, where voltage regulator modules (VRMs) communicate directly with their load and adjust supply voltages and/or even adapt their control characteristics based on temporary operating conditions.
