At the official opening ceremony, customers and suppliers were invited to view the facility's large-scale stock processing capacity and highly automated warehouse management system.
Environmental considerations were a priority in this expansion project, and the facility features a 6,000 m² solar energy system and a green roof (seeded with grass). Furthermore, the number of products stored closer to customers in continental Europe has almost tripled to nearly 500,000. This will not only contribute to a substantial reduction in the company's carbon footprint but will also ensure the highest service levels, with delivery reliability that meets EU and global standards.
The distribution center is equipped with a comprehensive computerized multi-carrier system and a two-kilometer-long conveyor belt. The system can manage 300,000 storage trays, which can be stored and retrieved at a rate of 9,000 trays per hour.
Located in the heart of Europe, this state-of-the-art facility has been expanded by approximately 16,000 m² to create a storage area of around 37,000 m². This provides additional space for a much wider range of products and stock levels, benefiting both suppliers and customers with improved service and delivery.
"The technological efficiency and increased storage capacity achieved with this expansion, in addition to bringing significant benefits to our supply chain in EMEA and globally, are a true reflection of the organization's commitment to our corporate social responsibility goal of advancing sustainability," said Debbie Lentz, President of Global Supply Chain at Electrocomponents. "We would like to thank the team in charge of the project and all the employees in Bad Hersfeld for carrying it out, especially considering the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19."
