With limited capacity, Europe is currently facing a significant battery shortage in the coming years. "We are pleased to support Northvolt in manufacturing the batteries of the future. With our Digital Enterprise portfolio, we are contributing to competitive battery core production in Europe that leverages the benefits of software and automation: greater flexibility, efficiency, and quality with a shorter time to market," said Jan Mrosik, CEO of Siemens' Digital Factory division.
“Northvolt is boosting battery production by developing a model that reduces its CO2 footprint. Our Digital Enterprise portfolio will support Northvolt in building a state-of-the-art battery plant. We are excited to partner on this project,” said Ulf Troedsson, President and CEO of Siemens Nordics. Once production is complete in 2020, Siemens plans to purchase batteries from the factory, making Northvolt its sole supplier. Siemens will support the partnership with a €10 million investment.
This technology partnership is based on two main areas of collaboration:
Cutting-edge technology. The use of Siemens' Enterprise Digital portfolio, which will cover everything from manufacturing planning and design software to automation, including industrial communication networks and cloud solutions, will enable Northvolt to optimize its battery production and sharpen its competitive advantage.
Supply of lithium-ion batteries. Siemens intends to purchase batteries from Northvolt once its large-scale production facility is operational. The companies are also exploring potential areas for future joint development programs.
Siemens and Northvolt have announced their recent partnership to develop best-in-class production technology for high-quality, eco-friendly lithium-ion batteries. The partnership, backed by Siemens through a €10 million investment, also includes the future supply of lithium-ion batteries.
