The ADC's wide dynamic scaling range, scalable data rates up to 64 kSPS, and internal fault detection monitors make the ADS131E08S suitable for smart grids and other types of industrial power monitoring, control, and protection applications.

The Texas Instruments ADS131E08S AFE incorporates a 24-bit, delta-sigma ADC, built-in programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs), an internal reference, and an internal oscillator on a single 10 mm² chip. The device leverages its eight true high-impedance differential inputs to interface directly with a resistor-divider network or voltage transformer to measure line voltage, or with a current transformer or Rogowski coil to measure line current. The ADS131E08S has a single-input multiplexer per channel that engineers can connect for testing internally generated signals, temperature detection, and fault detection. The device has integrated comparators to detect out-of-range conditions for the input signals by comparing the input voltage against a threshold voltage set by a three-bit DAC located outside the analog power supply.

The ADS131E08EVM-PDK performance demonstration kit, also available from Mouser, offers hardware and software for evaluating the ADS131E08S AFE. The kit includes the ADS131E08SEVM evaluation board and a TI MMB0 modular test board, and provides integrated analysis tools, including oscilloscope, FFT (Fast Fourier Transform), and histogram displays, as well as flexible input configurations and data export capabilities.

With high levels of integration and exceptional performance, the ADS131E08S enables engineers to create industrial-scale power systems at a significantly reduced size, power, and total cost.
