The new converter, which operates from the standard 270 Vdc (230-330 Vdc) MIL-STD-704E/F power rail, utilizes Vicor's Sine Amplitude Converter™ (SAC™) topology to deliver isolated power to a nominal 45 V rail with efficiency exceeding 96% and power density above 800 W/cubic inch, a low profile of less than 7 mm and a weight of only 14.5 g.
Systems using MBCM series bus converters connected to PRM™ Regulators and VTM™ Current Multipliers for pulse-feed control (e.g. radar) of loads, radio and satellite communications, compute/ASIC processors and memory, have a 60% smaller footprint, 3% higher efficiency, and enable complete power systems that are 66% lighter than previous best-in-class solutions.
“The power-to-weight ratio is a fundamental metric for any mobile application, whether air, sea, or land, and in this respect, the MBCM270 offers a fourfold advantage. It's about providing designers with small, efficient, and lightweight systems that deliver the right power for the end application,” emphasizes Stephen Oliver, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at VI Chip.
“This 3% efficiency improvement over previous best-in-class models translates to half the power losses, meaning half the fans, heatsinks, cooling plates, etc.,” continues Oliver, “and the MHz-level switching frequency also means smaller, lighter filters, as well as savings in excess weight and size. Once again, Vicor can say 'You can count on us' when it comes to meeting the defense electronics market's needs for simpler, more reliable power design.”
The MBCM270F450M270A00 with 45/48 V output and its companion bus converter MBCM270F338M235A00 with 28/33 V output are now available in Surface Mount Technology (SMT), push-in and thermally enhanced VI BRICK™ packaging versions.
