However, to ensure safe flight operations, these LED or LCD monitors must be robust enough to function under extreme environmental conditions.
As with any aeronautical application, the weight of the devices also plays a significant role, and each component must be as lightweight as possible to contribute to the aircraft's overall efficiency. For a new series of displays, a customer was looking for a standard, easy-to-implement power supply solution that met the following specifications:

The complete system must also meet the stringent environmental conditions specified in MIL-STD-810F. To achieve this, a combination is selected consisting of the MCF028008-001 module, with EMI filter and transient protection, and the RED60-24S12W converter, which generates a 12V bus, along with additional secondary DC/DC converters for the required voltages. These P-DUKE products, included in the OLFER Electronics catalog, perfectly meet the requirements for these projects.
The MCF-028008-001 incorporates active transient protection, limiting the output voltage to a maximum of 36V, and an EMI filter that meets MILD-STD-461G requirements. In addition, the module offers input current limiting, reverse polarity protection, and several other protection circuits.
This combination constitutes a plug-and-play solution that requires no design or qualification work, thus allowing the customer to minimize engineering costs. The RED60-24S12W converter offers a wide input voltage range of 9-36V and, unlike most converters from other manufacturers (which only operate correctly from 16V upwards), provides full output power even when the input voltage drops to 12V during initial startup (MILD-STD-1275). It can supply up to 60W and, in this application, is used to generate the main 12V bus.
The CPU board requires a 12V input voltage, as the integrated voltage regulator modules (VRMs) generate the necessary low voltages for the processor and memory. The various LCD screens require either 3.3V or 5V, and depending on the screen size, the power consumption ranges from 15W to 25W.
The P-DUKE DOH30-12T non-isolated converter, included in the OLFER Electronics catalog, is ideal for these requirements, as it is enough to connect a single resistor to the trimming pin to adjust the output voltage to 3.3V or 5V.
To avoid interference with other aircraft devices, the 3.3V and 5V input voltages for the video and signal interfaces are generated by isolated, low-power DC/DC converters, such as those in the P-DUKE EDL03 family. This series is available in several output voltages, and if other voltages are required in the future, they can be obtained simply by replacing the module without redesigning the PCB.
All modules used in this application are designed to withstand the harsh environmental conditions defined in MILD-STD-810F, and with a total weight of 78g, this power supply solution represents only 1% to 2% of the total weight of the complete unit. Since all modules are from a single manufacturer, they work seamlessly together. Combined with the front-end module, which is qualified for aerospace applications, the customer received a plug-and-play solution that could be integrated into various displays with minimal design effort.
