This AC module, supplied in a low-profile package measuring 3.75 x 1.91 inches (95.3mm x 48.6mm) and only 0.38 inches (9.55mm) high, provides a power density of 121 W/in3 (7.5W/cm3) or 54 W/in3 for a complete power supply that includes all necessary components, including retention capability.
Every electronic product or system, whether or not it operates connected to the AC power grid, must incorporate an AC/DC input stage to convert the AC mains voltage into the DC voltage required by the electronic circuitry. Acting as a "firewall" between the supply grid and the customer's electronics, an input stage must now perform complex tasks, such as power factor correction and noise reduction, to meet the stringent requirements of international regulatory agencies. Vicor's AC input stage module, which integrates rectification, filtering, and transient protection, allows customers to configure a complete input stage system that meets IEC 61000-3-2 specifications for harmonic noise and Class B conducted EMI emissions limitation, and delivers 330W to an external output storage capacity. Its powerful capabilities enable customers to simplify their certification processes and streamline their power system designs.
With its proprietary high-frequency zero-voltage switching and double-clamp topology (Double-Clamp ZVS), this AC input stage module achieves high efficiency – up to 92% – across the entire AC input voltage range, including operation from 85VAC, and reduces power losses by more than 50% compared to its competitors. This AC input stage also simplifies thermal requirements for customers by reducing both the size and cost of cooling components.
The new VI BRICK® AC input stage module is compatible with a wide variety of downstream DC/DC power conversion components, including Vicor's extensive portfolio of high-density, high-efficiency VI Chip and VI BRICK converters. When used with compatible DC/DC converters that support energy storage on the secondary side and efficient power distribution, the AC input stage module delivers enhanced power system performance and connectivity from the outlet to the point of load, enabling customers to design reliable and cost-effective power systems.
Availability and Support Resources:
Vicor's new VI BRICK AC input stage modules will be available with temperature ratings for consumer (-20°C to 100°C), telecommunications (-40°C to 100°C), and military (-55°C to 100°C) applications. This product will be available through the distributor network by the end of the year.
