This family of AEC-Q100 Grade 1 10BASE-T1S devices consists of the LAN8670, LAN8671, and LAN8672. Designed for functional safety and ISO 26262 applications, the LAN8670/1/2 10BASE-T1S Ethernet devices enable the connection of low-speed devices that previously required their own communication systems to a standard Ethernet system in automotive applications.

“Microchip continues to prioritize connectivity solutions for the automotive industry with the expansion of its 10BASE-T1S product line,” said Matthias Kaestner, vice president of Microchip’s automotive product business unit. “This new technology, which will connect sensors and actuators used in the physical world to the cloud, will enable system-wide Ethernet architecture.”

The ability to connect multiple Ethernet devices to a common bus line simplifies the deployment of automotive applications on a single, well-established architecture and reduces costs by minimizing cabling and switch ports. The LAN8670/1/2 enables the use of Ethernet and IP (Internet Protocol) at the network edge to facilitate communication with the rest of the network infrastructure. These devices include advanced device diagnostics to provide troubleshooting capabilities. Additionally, the sleep/wake functionality allows for low-power operation.

The 10BASE-T1S device specifications include 10 Mbps speed, half-duplex mode, flexible topology with multidrop and point-to-point bus lines, and the use of a single balanced pair of conductors. These devices also offer improved electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference (EMC/EMI) performance.

By supporting Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), they enable synchronized timing with long-distance Ethernet networks. Synchronization is essential for many applications in automotive zonal architectures.

Microchip's contribution has been fundamental in the development of the standards, along with the IEEE, for the 10BASE-T1S technology approved for automotive applications. This technology simplifies system design by extending Ethernet coverage to devices typically located at the network edge.
