Most low- to medium-power inverting DC/DC converters use a coupled inductor or transformer. However, the LTC3896 uses a single inductor and transforms a positive input voltage of 4V to (150V– |VOUT–|) to a regulated negative output voltage of -60V to -0.8V at output currents up to 15 amps. Efficiency is up to 96%, making it ideal for transportation, telecommunications, industrial, and power distribution applications.
The LTC features true ground-reference controls, eliminating the need for level-tuning components for interfacing. This part draws only 40µA in quiescent mode with the output voltage in regulation mode, making it ideal for always-on systems. The powerful 1Ω N-channel MOSFET gate drivers can be adjusted from 5V to 10V to enable the use of logic-level or standard-level MOSFETs, maximizing efficiency.
The LTC3896 operates at a fixed frequency that can be programmed from 50 kHz to 900 kHz and can be synchronized to external clocks from 75 kHz to 850 kHz. The user can select between forced continuous operation, pulse hopping mode, or Burst Mode® with low output voltage ripple for low loads. Its current-control mode architecture provides easy control loop compensation, fast output current transient response, and excellent line regulation. Current sensing is achieved either through a measurement after the output coil's DC resistance (DCR) for improved efficiency or with an optional sensing resistor. The progressive current limit restricts heat dissipation in the MOSFETs during overload conditions. Other additional features include an adjustable ripple limiter in pulse burst mode, a current limit, a logic signal indicating that the output voltage is correct (powergood), an internal bootstrap diode, and soft start of the output voltage.
The LTC3896 is available in a thermally enhanced TSSOP-38 package with multiple pins removed to provide space for high voltages. Two junction temperature ratings are available with extended and industrial versions ranging from -40°C to 125°C, and there is also a high-temperature automotive version: -40°C to 150°C.
