The EMC181x family of temperature sensors also adds a feature that indicates the rate of change of the system temperature and provides advance warning of temperature fluctuations.

Temperature sensors allow designers to reduce system power consumption and strain in applications such as the Internet of Things and personal computing devices where temperature measurement is essential for operation.

Monitoring temperature at multiple points with a single integrated temperature sensor reduces board complexity and simplifies design. The EMC181x family of temperature sensors offers multiple remote channels operating at 1.8V to accommodate various design needs ranging from two to five channels. This family is ideal for applications in 3.3V systems that are adapting to lower supply voltages, such as battery-powered Internet of Things applications, personal computing devices, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and graphics processing units (GPUs). Furthermore, the EMC181x family has registers and voltage compatibility with Microchip's well-known 3.3V EMC14xx temperature sensors, making the adoption of 1.8V a viable and feasible solution. With the three-channel model, which has 8 pins and occupies 2 x 2 mm, and the five-channel model with 10 pins and 2 x 2.5 mm, the sensors can also reduce the number of devices needed for remote temperature monitoring.

Thanks to their ability to measure the rate of change of system temperature, the EMC181x devices are the first on the market to offer two-dimensional temperature sensing. In addition to indicating the normal temperature, this feature informs customers of the rate of temperature change within the system and shares data that can help improve application regulation.

These devices, ideal for closed-loop control systems and other applications prioritizing lower voltage rails, provide advance warning of temperature increases or decreases, thus protecting the system from potential failures. Operating at 1.8V, the EMC181x multichannel sensor family is compatible with Microchip's extensive portfolio of low-voltage, low-power microcontrollers.

The ADM00773 evaluation board provides everything needed to demonstrate the EMC1833 1.8V, three-channel, two-wire temperature sensor and to understand the operation of other members of the EMC181xx family. It facilitates the evaluation of programmable functions such as rate of change, temperature limit alerts, and resistance error correction (REC), and also provides external temperature measurements and data logging. The evaluation board connects to a PC via a USB interface card and comes with the graphical user interface for Microchip's thermal management software.

The EMC181x family consists of five devices, all of which are now available for sampling and volume production.
