Each full-bridge output is rated up to 1.6 A and 40 V. The Allegro A5990 includes fixed pulse-width modulation (PWM) current regulators, along with 2-bit nonlinear digital-to-analog converters (DACs) that allow stepper motors to be controlled in full, half, and quarter steps, and DC motors in forward, reverse, and cruise modes. High-resolution micro-stepping control is possible via independent current control reference voltage inputs for each full bridge. The A5990 PWM current regulator incorporates an externally adjustable turn-off time to adapt current control to the supply voltage and motor parameters. Each pair of bridges can be adjusted independently. The device also features an adaptive percentage fast decay (APFD) option that automatically and continuously adjusts the fast decay portion of the turn-off time to provide greater step accuracy, lower current ripple, and reduced power dissipation. Alternatively, the A5990 can be configured to use Allegro's proprietary mixed-down mode with a fast-down percentage of 30.1%.
Internal synchronous rectifier control circuitry is provided to improve power dissipation during PWM operation. To minimize power consumption when not in use, the device can be put into a low-current sleep mode. Protection features include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overcurrent protection (OCP), and crossover current protection. No special power-up sequencing is required.
The A5990 is supplied in an EV package, a 40-pin 6 mm x 6 mm QFN package with a nominal overall package height of 0.90 mm. The package is lead-free (Pb) with 100% matte tin-plated lead plating. It is aimed at dual-axis multi-motor systems, including CCTV (pan and tilt), 3D printing, point of sale (receipt printers and lottery printers), office automation (laser printers, copiers, etc.), medical (diagnostic systems) and the industrial automation market (ATMs and pick-and-place machines).
