One of the main benefits of the Allegro ACS720 is its high isolation capability with a reduced bill of materials, made possible by the patented SOIC-16W IC package. The ACS720 operates on a single 5V supply while maintaining a 0-3V output voltage swing, with a stable zero-current output of 1.5V. This allows the ACS720 to operate outside of a 5V source while still providing an output compatible with the typical 3.3V ADCs found in many MCUs. Furthermore, the ACS720's high PSRR rejects noise frequently found in the power supply section of the PCB or system, maintaining high accuracy in noisy environments.
The device features two user-configurable fault functions. Fast and slow fault outputs enable short-circuit and overcurrent detection. A user-configurable resistor divider from the ACS720's power supply is used to adjust the fault level. The fault outputs are open-drain, allowing the user to boost them to a compatible voltage for the MCU. The open-drain outputs also enable the implementation of a simple logic OR gate across multiple sensor fault outputs.
The ACS720 also integrates differential current sensing, which rejects external magnetic fields, greatly simplifying board layout in three-phase motor applications. Closed-loop accuracy is achieved in this open-loop sensor IC thanks to Allegro's proprietary digital temperature compensation, ultimately providing a smaller and more cost-effective solution for many current sensing applications that traditionally rely on closed-loop core-based sensors.
The ACS720 is supplied in a small, surface-mount SOIC16 package. The leadframe is 100% matte tin-plated, which is compatible with standard lead-free (Pb) printed circuit board assembly processes. Internally, the device is Pb-free, except for the high-temperature Pb-based solder balls, which are currently RoHS exempt. The device is fully calibrated before shipment from the factory.
