The silent, normally open TLP3640A replaces conventional 1-Form-A mechanical relays to improve system reliability and reduce power consumption. Housed in a 4-pin SO4 package measuring only 2.6 mm x 7 mm (typical), the mounting area is reduced by 70% compared to mechanical relays and by 30% compared to Toshiba's TLP3122A, contributing to a smaller application size and lower printed circuit board costs.

The new photorelay is manufactured using Toshiba's proprietary chip-on-chip technology (3D integration technology with vertical chip stacking) to deliver an off-state output terminal voltage (VOFF) of 60 V (minimum), a constant on-state current (ION) of 1 A (maximum), and a pulsed on-state current (IONP) of up to 3 A. The on-state resistance (RON) is 0.14 Ω (typical), enabling highly efficient operation, while the off-state current (IOFF) is 1 µA (maximum).

By improving the characteristics of the internal LED and photodiode arrays, the new TLP3640A offers maximum switching times of 0.5 ms (tON) and 0.2 ms (tOFF). These faster switching speeds make the new product suitable for analog interface sections in programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and selectable-gain amplifiers used in measuring instruments.

With a minimum insulation voltage (BVS) of 3750 Vrms, the device is fully UL1577 listed for safety-critical applications, as well as cUL recognized and VDE approved. Furthermore, compared to the existing TLP3122A device, which is rated for an operating temperature from -40 °C to +85 °C, the TLP3640A operates up to +110 °C (maximum), improving the thermal design flexibility of the equipment.
