With integrated features such as flexible interface logic, EMI mitigation with programmable door actuation, motor current feedback, and multiple diagnostic functions, these devices require very few external components and are available in a 4x4 mm QFN package, 36% smaller than comparable 5x5 mm devices.
The A89505 and A89506 are ideal for automotive applications such as window and door actuators, electric vehicle charger locks, electronic parking brakes, and folding mirrors. Their solid-state design also makes them ideal for battery-powered applications incorporating brushed DC motors, such as building automation and robotics, improving reliability and battery life while facilitating a smaller design.
Both controllers include integrated current-sensing capabilities, eliminating the need for external current-sensing resistors and reducing the external component requirement to as few as seven. Integrated diagnostics also eliminate the need to program the microprocessor and add extra circuitry. Designers can include the functionality they need in smaller systems, reducing bills of materials (BOMs) and printed circuit board (PCB) sizes, while increasing performance and improving the user experience.
The A89505 and A89506 models build on Allegro's decades of experience in motor control. Both are capable of delivering absolute peak voltages of 50V and offer higher gate drive voltage at low VBB and greater efficiency when battery-powered, allowing designers to specify lower-cost FETs. They even allow for lower current consumption in quiescent states to reduce overall battery drain.
“As cars move toward full electrification, designers are looking for motor controllers that increase performance and battery life without adding size to system designs. The same is true for those designing for the Internet of Things and industrial applications,” says Steve Lutz, director of the motor controller business line at Allegro. “In addition to being 36% smaller than other controllers on the market, the A89505 and A89506 include advanced features and capabilities that help designers reduce the overall size of printed circuit boards and fit everything into more compact modules.
Both controllers are easier to use and deploy than relays or discrete systems, and they increase overall reliability while reducing power consumption.”
Integrated functions enhance design flexibility.
The A89505 and A89506 gate drivers provide superior motor control compared to mechanical relays and reduce the need for external components. The programmable gate driver minimizes EMI and transients caused by rapid switching, and both drivers can adjust gate current to better control the spin rate of external MOSFETs.
Both devices include current limit detection indicators, which activate when the programmable current limit is reached. This feature allows a vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU) to detect spikes or stops, potentially supercharging a motor in icing or freezing conditions.
