Eliminating separate DC-DC stages reduces the number of components, the footprint on the printed circuit board, and increases efficiency by up to 10 percentage points compared to traditional two-stage architectures. Contributing to this efficiency are the 750V PowiGaN™ gallium nitride transistors, zero-voltage switching (no active clamp), and synchronous rectification.
Roland Saint-Pierre, Vice President of Product Development at Power Integrations, stated: "Most modern electronic systems rely on multiple internal voltages to operate various functions, such as computing, communication, and drive functions—typically heat, light, sound, or motion of some kind. But losses at each conversion stage compound, degrading system performance and generating heat. The InnoMux-2 integrated circuit overcomes this challenge by providing up to three independently regulated voltage outputs or two voltage outputs and one constant current output from a single stage, resulting in a compact and efficient power subsystem with a low component count."
The InnoMux-2 integrated circuits provide up to 90 watts of output power with precise regulation exceeding ±3 percent under all input line, load, temperature, and differential current conditions. The overall efficiency of the power supply system (regulated low-voltage AC-to-DC segment) is greater than 90 percent. The advanced InnoMux-2 controller also manages power delivery under light loads, eliminating the need for pre-charge resistors and reducing no-load consumption to less than 30 mW. This conserves energy for essential functions in applications subject to the 300 mW standby limit under European Energy Consuming Products (EuP) regulations.
The InnoMux-2 devices utilize Power Integrations' thermally efficient InSOP™24 and InSOP™28 packages with PCB cooling, eliminating the need for a heatsink. Device options include two and three constant voltage (CV) outputs; optionally, one output can be dedicated to constant current (DC), suitable for powering LEDs in displays or for high-speed charging of an internal battery.
Typical applications include televisions, monitors, household appliances, networks, home and building automation, emergency LED lighting, and industrial power supplies.
