“Road warriors demand lightweight, compact, and powerful adapters capable of rapidly charging all their mission-critical devices. The expanded power range of the new InnoSwitch4-CZ and ClampZero integrated circuits allows charger/adapter designers to easily exceed 23 W per cubic inch for single- or multi-output USB PD 3.1 certified designs,” explained Edward Ong, senior director of product marketing at Power Integrations. “Even with 220 W of output power, the family’s high efficiency minimizes waste heat; large heatsinks are not needed on any of the active devices. The maximum switching frequency of up to 140 kHz minimizes transformer size, and the high level of integration roughly halves the number of passive components, MOSFETs, and diodes that make safety-compliant PCB design challenging.”
The InnoSwitch4-CZ ICs feature a robust 750 V PowiGaN™ primary commutator, active clamp drive, and synchronous rectification in a compact InSOP™-24D package. Secondary-side sensing—achieved through Power Integrations' high-speed FluxLink™ communications technology—provides exceptional CV/DC accuracy.
Ong adds: "Using a non-complementary active clamp allows for designs that operate in both continuous (CCM) and discontinuous (DCM) modes. By operating in multiple modes, it's much easier to withstand the wide load/range conditions typically encountered in USB PD applications."
The InnoSwitch4-CZ ICs consume less than 30 mW under no-load conditions, including input voltage monitoring. The integrated circuits feature a comprehensive set of protection functions, including automatic reset or latching fault response for output overvoltages and undervoltages; multiple output undervoltage fault thresholds; and primary over-temperature latching or hysteretic protection.
