The Maxim DeepCover DS28E39 and DS28E84 authenticators, available from Mouser Electronics, help design engineers protect medical devices against invasive attacks. The devices provide a core set of integrated block-derived cryptographic tools, including an asymmetric ECC-P256 hardware engine (plus a symmetric SHA-256 calculation engine in the DS28E84), a FIPS-compliant true random number generator (FIPS/NIST compliant for the DS28E39), and a strict decrement counter. The devices also include integrated non-volatile memory (2 Kbits of secured EEPROM in the DS28E39 and 15 Kbits of FRAM in the DS28E84) and offer a unique 64-bit ROM ID number, which is used as a critical input parameter for cryptographic operations and serves as an electronic serial number within the application.
Designed to protect devices against security attacks, the DS28E39 is a secure ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) public-key authenticator that incorporates Maxim's patented ChipDNA™ Physically Unclonable Function (PUD) technology. Attempts to probe or observe ChipDNA's operation alter the underlying circuitry, preventing the discovery of the unique value used by the chip's cryptographic functions.
The DS28E84 is a radiation-resistant, secure authenticator designed for medical devices. The high radiation exposure used in sterilization processes can disrupt and damage the standard non-volatile memory (NVM) used by electronic medical devices for automatic identification, as well as calibration and manufacturing data. The DS28E84 IC's high radiation resistance of up to 50 kilograys allows manufacturing or calibration data to be programmed by the user before medical sterilization, protecting against unauthorized reuse and improving patient safety. Both
the DS28E39 and DS28E84 communicate via the single-contact 1-Wire® bus at standard and overrun speeds, enabling simple integration into designs. Communication follows the 1-Wire protocol, with the ROM ID acting as the node address in a multi-device 1-Wire network.
