The MLX91231 is designed for DC-DC converters, battery terminal sensors, high and low voltage power distribution, and disconnect devices.

Accurate measurement of low-voltage electronics within vehicles has always been a crucial factor in maintaining system performance and safety.

Vehicle intelligence is increasing, and at the same time, more low-voltage functions are being added to the Advanced Driver Assistance System. These functions rely on low voltage. This is driving a growing demand for high-performance, safe, and reliable current and voltage sensors.

The MLX91231 offers excellent accuracy, with a sensitivity drift error of less than ±0.25% over temperature and lifetime and an input offset drift error of 1.5 μV under the same conditions. It enables closer monitoring and, therefore, greater optimization of low-voltage systems such as DC/DC converters, battery terminal sensors (BTS), and zonal power distribution and monitoring. The MLX91231 features exceptional output stability and EMC resilience, making it ideal for deployment even in the most demanding automotive environments.

By utilizing an integrated MCU, the MLX91231 offers advanced functionalities that go beyond simple current measurement. Powered by a regulated 5V battery or directly by a 12V battery, this IVT sensor provides junction current, voltage, and temperature readings via a selectable LIN or UART output. A key feature provided by the MCU is the integrated, diagnosable overcurrent detection (OCD). This enables the safe and simple activation of pyroelectric fuses without the need to develop a complex safety mechanism. The MLX91231 complies with ASIL B(D) according to ISO 26262 and supports system-level integration up to ASIL D.

The custom software design of the MLX91231 is consistent with existing and future Melexis solutions. With its platform-centric approach, Melexis provides familiarity and enables software reuse, while the availability of a dedicated solution streamlines development time and reduces costs. Furthermore, the MLX91231 features a compact 8-pin SOIC package that simplifies system integration.

"The new MLX91231 shunt current sensor complements our portfolio of Hall effect-based products. By offering multiple sensor technologies, we clearly demonstrate our commitment to all DC and power sensing applications," says Bruno Boury, Product Line Manager at Melexis. "With integrated safety systems, we simplify engineers' workload when it comes to safety compliance.".
