Although optical encoders have traditionally been used, market demand for greater manufacturing efficiency, system reliability, and lower production costs is driving the search for more practical alternatives.
The MLX90520 is a high-precision, 22-bit resolution encoder that provides low-noise, zero-latency inductive position sensing for rotary and linear motion (up to 400 mm). This facilitates the safe and repeatable control of large robotic arms, linear actuators, and other rotating assemblies. The MLX90520 offers significant advantages in size and robustness compared to traditional optical encoders and provides SPI or SSI output.
For applications with large through-shafts, the low profile of the MLX90520 module (less than 3 mm, including the IC, PCB, and target) allows for the development of more compact and simplified mechanical assemblies compared to optical or magnetic encoders, which require large magnets. The inherent immunity of inductive sensors to dust and other contaminants ensures long-term reliability in robots. The integration of onboard digital processing and compliance with SIL 3 at the system level further enhance functional safety, thus guaranteeing operational safety.
The inductive sensor offers a cost advantage over its traditional optical counterparts. This is achieved through the lower initial cost of the MLX90520 inductive interface components compared to optical encoders, as well as streamlined system integration and development, since the device only requires the configuration of a few parameters before operation.
“With the inductive MLX90520, we are providing the robotics industry with an alternative to optical encoders that offers high performance, a competitive price, and easy development, helping engineers expand their applications,” says Lorenzo Lugani, Product Line Manager at Melexis. “The device has already been well received by many companies and will help our customers drive future success in the market.”
