10BASE-T1S allows Ethernet transmission over a single pair of conductors and supports multidrop configurations where multiple nodes share the same physical bus. The LAN8679 is a 10BASE-T1S transceiver that incorporates an Open Alliance 3-Pin (OA3P) interface and is supplied in an eight-pin VDFN package.

The OA3P interface provides a standardized connection between the transceiver and the processing or control device, while the encapsulation is node-oriented with space and connection number restrictions.

The device is designed for use in edge nodes within Ethernet architectures, including industrial and automotive applications.
The LAN8680 combines the functions of a 10BASE-T1S transceiver with features typical of a System Basis Chip (SBC).

Integrated functions include power management, control of system wake and sleep states, and monitoring capabilities. This integration allows Ethernet communications and certain auxiliary functions necessary for the node's operation to be concentrated in a single component. According to Microchip, the new devices are designed in accordance with AEC-Q100 and ISO 26262 requirements for automotive applications.

The expansion also includes the LAN8660X/1X/2X family, which integrates a PMD transceiver within a single-chip solution based on RCP (Remote Control Protocol). These devices are designed to implement 10BASE-T1S endpoints without requiring an external physical transceiver. Supported applications include control, lighting, and audio systems, as well as other nodes located at the edges of an Ethernet network.

One of the features of 10BASE-T1S is the ability to use a multidrop topology. In this configuration, several devices can share the same bus line instead of requiring a separate physical Ethernet connection for each node.

Microchip indicates that these configurations can typically incorporate eight or more nodes on the same bus. This architecture allows sensors, actuators, and other devices to be connected directly via Ethernet and can reduce the number of connections and the amount of cabling required compared to certain point-to-point architectures.

The LAN8679, LAN8680, and LAN8660X/1X/2X expand Microchip's Single Pair Ethernet offering for zonal architectures in automotive, industrial automation, robotics, and aerospace and defense systems.
