The new PolarFire FPGA Burst Mode Receiver (BMR) solution is also the only one of its kind to enable 10G PON solutions in SFP (Small Form Factor Pluggable) and XFP (10 Gb SFP) modules.

Microchip's new BMR solution enables customers to develop OLTs in smaller modules than ever before, with minimal power consumption in extreme temperature environments. Fully customizable and boasting the fastest blocking times on the market—10.8 nanoseconds on midrange FPGAs for PON—BMR allows for compact PON solutions in very small optical modules. PONs, which are becoming an increasingly widespread telecommunications technology for delivering fiber to end users, employ a point-to-multipoint architecture using passive fiber optic splitters so that a single optical fiber covers multiple endpoints.

Thanks to the combination of PolarFire FPGAs and the new BMR technology, designers can build unique, proprietary solutions aimed at addressing the main challenges of reducing power consumption and heat dissipation in PON equipment in a small form factor, as demanded by end customers to enable operators to expand their remote installation options.

The new PolarFire FPGA BMR solution for 10G PON is supported by a suite of tools that enhances application development. These include a reference design, the Libero Integrated Design Environment (IDE), and a hardware kit.

The new PolarFire FPGA BMR solution for PON 10G is now available and is free for current subscribers of Microchip's Libero design package.
