Compatible with the DOSA (Distributed-power Open Standards Alliance) 5-pin eighth-brick standard size and offering an input range of 36V to 75V, the new PKB4313D advanced bus converter is ideal for intermediate bus conversion in ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) applications.
With excellent thermal capabilities, the new high-power module employs Ericsson's cutting-edge HRR technology to deliver high-power conversion across a wide input voltage range while maintaining low power losses. Together, these factors have resulted in a module that enables high-efficiency power conversion with exemplary performance in thermally challenging environments. Providing typical efficiency exceeding 96% with a 48V input and 12V output at half load, the module also offers significantly reduced energy and cooling costs. Competitive products typically dissipate 15% or more power at full load than the PKB4313D.
The PKB4313D is the first product to be launched from Ericsson's new eighth-generation PKB-D high-power platform, followed by 3.3V and 5V output regulators, as well as additional 12V output modules, offering different input voltage ranges and power levels. Meeting the requirements for implementing distributed power supply architectures and intermediate bus voltage architectures within the industrial, ICT, and telecommunications sectors, the new target applications for this high-power, high-performance module include network and telecommunications equipment, servers and data storage, and industrial equipment.
In developing this advanced DC/DC module, Ericsson has leveraged its innovative HRR topology. Initially introduced in the company's high-end PKM-NH quarter-brick family, the technology has now been further enhanced to provide improved powertrain system utilization. The scheme operates with ratio regulation in the very low input range, capable of handling transients and sudden changes in input voltage, and typically operates in fixed-voltage regulated mode from an input of 42V and above. The module's excellent response to line and load transients ensures that the output voltage remains stable and immune to voltage deviations caused by current fluctuations on the system bus. This maintains the integrity of the intermediate bus voltage within the tolerance band required by power system architects.
The module's powertrain also employs full-bridge synchronous rectification on the primary side, which is not commonly found in competing devices in this price range. This, combined with the use of state-of-the-art transistors (FETs), results in excellent efficiency across the entire power range. The use of the HRR control scheme has resulted in a reduction of up to 15% in total power loss below a 42V input.
Offering excellent thermal performance under challenging circumstances, the regulator provides greater usable power in high ambient temperatures or limited airflow conditions, leading to increased reliability. For example, the use of tellurium copper pins provides excellent thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the FETs are positioned on the top side of the module, making it easy to attach a thermal pad directly to the FETs and transfer heat to an optional backplate for connecting the module to a heatsink or cooling plate. The optimized module design, utilizing low-profile thermally critical components, also achieves exceptional heat transfer to the backplate or heatsink.
The PKB4313D comes in the industry-standard eighth-brick form factor, measuring 58.4 x 22.7 x 9.6 mm (2.30 x 0.89 x 0.38 in). The module is available in surface-mount or through-hole versions, providing high flexibility in board assembly. It offers 2250 V (dc) of input/output (I/O) isolation and incorporates a range of I/O and operational protection features. These include remote commissioning and control, as well as protection against input undervoltage, output overvoltage, overtemperature, and output short circuits. The device meets the safety requirements of IEC/EN/UL60950-1 and has a calculated MTBF of 8.9 million hours.
“The new PKB4313D is the first in a new series of advanced high-power intermediate bus converters from Ericsson,” said Martin Hägerdal, President of Ericsson Power Modules. “The module combines the company’s innovative HRR topology, further enhanced for this new series, with world-class energy efficiency, tightly regulated voltage capabilities, and best-in-class thermal management features. Overall, the new product offers a compelling package that provides a significant competitive advantage for customers working on cutting-edge applications for telecoms, networking, and industrial applications.”.
The PKB4313D has been designed and manufactured by Ericsson to meet the highest standards available for DC/DC power converters in the industry, delivering the levels of quality and reliability required by power system designers to develop long-term, high-performance platforms.
