Power Integrations' Director of Product Marketing, Edward Ong, comments: "Designs using HiperPFS-4 ICs exhibit very high efficiency across the entire load range, with no-load power consumption as low as 36 mW at 230 VAC. The HiperPFS-4 family is ideal for PCs and televisions, as well as battery chargers, power tools, industrial power supplies, and LED lighting. The active devices embedded in the HiperPFS-4 ICs have a voltage rating of 600 V, making it easy to meet the frequently requested 80% derating specifications.".

The HiperPFS-4 IC combines a continuous conduction mode (CCM) PFC control circuit, a boost diode, and a 600V MOSFET into a single device. The inclusion of the boost diode reduces the heatsink mounting area, enabling a simpler design and improved thermal performance. Furthermore, the integrated Qspeed diode also provides greater robustness against AC line surges by minimizing parasitic trace inductances, which in turn reduces voltage spikes observed by the power switch during transients by up to 50V. The integrated 600V MOSFET is therefore easily capable of meeting the 80% bucking requirement when supplied with a constant 385VDC bus voltage.

The HiperPFS-4 ICs achieve a power factor greater than 0.95 under a load exceeding 20%. The Qspeed boost diode is optimized for continuous PFC conduction mode operation, with very low reverse recovery losses approaching the performance of silicon carbide devices without the cost penalty.
