The new RISC-V CPU core will complement Renesas' existing portfolio of 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) IP, including its proprietary RX family and the RA family based on the Arm® Cortex®-M architecture.
RISC-V is an open ISA that is gaining popularity in the semiconductor industry due to its flexibility, scalability, energy efficiency, and open ecosystem. While many MCU vendors have formed joint investment alliances to accelerate their RISC-V product development, Renesas has already developed a new RISC-V core independently. This versatile CPU can serve as a primary application controller, a complementary secondary core in SoCs, on-chip subsystems, or even deeply embedded ASSPs.
Renesas' RISC-V CPU achieves a performance of 3.27 CoreMark/MHz, outperforming similar architectures on the market. It includes extensions to enhance performance and reduce code size.
