In recent years, the continuous evolution of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and the improvement of in-vehicle infotainment functions have demanded the use of larger screens. Consequently, LED drivers for LCD backlighting in automotive displays must provide high-efficiency drive capabilities that improve the rated output current and reduce power consumption. Furthermore, since flickering in automotive displays can lead to reduced visibility and unsafe situations, LED drivers must be able to prevent this.
Conventional LED drivers consume relatively large amounts of power and are prone to flickering during PWM dimming. ROHM, on the other hand, has developed LED drivers for LCD backlighting that combine patented low-power technology with seamless PWM dimming. This eliminates flickering when changing the screen brightness from low to high.
These new products leverage patented low-power technology to reduce losses in the current control circuits of the LED drivers. The result is a total integrated circuit power consumption 20% lower than that of conventional products under typical conditions (LED circuit current of 80 mA/channel, 12 V power supply). This contributes to reduced power consumption in medium and large automotive displays, where energy efficiency is a critical factor.
At the same time, all models are equipped with both DC and PWM dimming to meet a wide range of requirements. Since switching the current feedback mode for low/high brightness changes is no longer necessary thanks to ROHM's patented seamless PWM dimming technology, the flicker associated with general PWM dimming is reduced, thus improving system reliability.
In the future, ROHM will continue to contribute to the evolution of next-generation mobility by developing products that leverage its strengths in analog technology to promote technological advancement and lower energy consumption in future automotive cabin functions.
