Although the global semiconductor shortage is beginning to ease, the supply of semiconductor components for power supplies in industrial applications continues to lag behind demand. This is especially true for PWM controller ICs, where the limited number of manufacturers has led to a chronic shortage, resulting in numerous product development requests.
In response, ROHM has developed PWM controller integrated circuits that counteract the current supply problem by meeting the stringent packaging and performance requirements of the industrial market. Depending on the application's input AC voltage range, a wide variety of semiconductors are used for the power supply circuit. Each of these semiconductors requires different levels of undervoltage cutoff to prevent thermal runaway in the event of a supply/gate voltage drop. To address this issue, ROHM has developed four variants with varying levels of undervoltage cutoff.
The new products feature an input voltage range of 6.9 V to 28.0 V, a circuit current of up to 2.0 mA, a maximum inrush current of 75 µA, and a maximum duty cycle of 50%. They are offered in the standard SOP-J8 package (equivalent to JEDEC SOIC8). The products are pin-compatible with standard products commonly used in power supply circuits, reducing redesign and modification efforts. All variants are equipped with a self-recovering, voltage hysteresis, ultra-low voltage lockout (UVLO) function, which significantly improves application reliability by reducing the threshold voltage error to ±5%, compared to the typical ±10% of standard products.
At the same time, these ICs are designed for long-term supply, ensuring the continuous operation of long-life industrial equipment. In the future, the range will be further expanded to include products suitable for driving high-voltage MOSFETs and GaN devices. Additional variants are also planned to support a maximum duty cycle of 100%.
